TIL that some people can voluntarily control the tensor tympani, a muscle within the ear. Contracting these muscles produces vibration and sound. The sound is usually described as a rumbling sound.

This drove me crazy for a while, because I can do it- but I didn’t know what it was and I couldn’t figure out how to describe the rumbling sound in my ears. It usually happens when I shut my eyes super tight. Glad to see that I’m not alone, and that there’s a good explanation of what it is!

can everyone not do this??? i thought that hearing a rumbling static noise from the muscles in your ears when you squeezed your face shut really hard was universal

dont fucking talk to me if you cant do this

I can do this! It’s like a thundering in my ears I can make happen whenever.

When I was much younger it happened involuntarily which was terrifying and I couldn’t shut it off sometimes and I couldn’t even hear myself think and it was awful.

But now it’s super cool because I can control it, it still happens accidentally sometimes like when I’m concentrating super hard, but I can stop it easily.

I’ve always associated it with the whooshing noise that happens when Jedi use the Force (even though it sounds quite different, haha) so whenever I’m pretending to use the Force I always make the thunder thing happen and it makes things feel much more authentic.
